Course Title: 0512 Language and sociocultural issues in Ukraine and Belarus in the late 19th and 20th centuries
Course Description
This course aims to introduce students to the studies of sociocultural and language situation in Eastern Galicia and Belarus in the late 19th and 20th centuries. It determines the functions of city koine and social dialects in the structure of the city language, outlines the role of co-territorial languages, e.g., Polish, German, and Yiddish in Eastern Galicia as well as Polish and Russian in Belarus in forming phonetical, lexical, and syntax systems of the Western region variety of Ukrainian and Belarusian language. The course focuses on the lexical features of the Ukrainian and Belarusian languages in their relation to political, social, religious, and historical factors of the given territory.
